Who we are

This website, dwaterhousebooks.com, is run by Daniel Waterhouse (DwaterhouseBooks), an author based in South Yorkshire, UK. Daniel is the data controller for the personal information collected through this site.

If you have any questions about this policy or your data, email hello@dwaterhousebooks.com.

What we collect and why

When you buy something. We collect your name, email address, billing and delivery address, phone number (if you give it) and your order details. We use this to process and deliver your order, send you your eBooks, handle returns and keep the records we must keep for tax purposes. The lawful bases are performing our contract with you and our legal obligations.

When you sign up to the newsletter. We collect your email address (and name if you give it) to send you news about books and writing. The lawful basis is your consent. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

When you leave a comment. We collect the name, email address and website you enter, your comment, your IP address and browser details. This helps us manage comments and prevent spam. Your email address is never shown publicly. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running the site.

When you contact us. If you email us, we use your details only to reply to you.

Site security and statistics. Like most websites, our server records technical information such as IP addresses to keep the site secure and working. We also use basic statistics to see which pages are popular so we can improve the site. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest.

Who we share your data with

We never sell your data. We only share it with the services we need to run the site and shop:

  • IONOS — hosts this website.
  • WooCommerce, WooPayments (Stripe) and PayPal — run the shop and take payments. We never see or store your full card details.
  • Printful — prints and posts merchandise orders, so they receive your name, delivery address and order details.
  • eBook WooSell — delivers eBook files to you after purchase.
  • Jetpack and WordPress.com (Automattic) — site statistics, security and notifications.
  • Gravatar (Automattic) — may show a profile picture next to comments, using a scrambled (hashed) version of your email address.

Some of these companies are based outside the UK, including in the USA. Where your data is transferred abroad, it is protected by UK adequacy regulations or approved safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

Cookies

This site uses cookies. Essential cookies make the shop work (for example, remembering what is in your basket). Other cookies, such as statistics and marketing cookies, are only used as described in our cookie banner. You can change your cookie choices at any time using the privacy settings link shown on every page.

Cookie consent records

We use Real Cookie Banner to manage cookie consent. When you make a choice, it stores a cookie on your device with your consent preferences and a record of that consent on our server, including a unique ID, the date and time, your choices and a shortened (anonymised) IP address. We keep these records to show that we obtained valid consent, as required by law.

Embedded content

Pages on this site may include embedded content such as videos or images from other websites. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you visited the other website, and that website may collect data about you. Where it needs your consent, it will be blocked until you agree.

How long we keep your data

  • Order records: six years after the end of the financial year, as required by HMRC.
  • Newsletter subscriptions: until you unsubscribe.
  • Comments: kept unless you ask us to remove them.
  • Cookie consent records: as long as needed to prove consent.
  • Emails: as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of your data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, to have it moved to another service, and to withdraw consent at any time. To use any of these rights, email hello@dwaterhousebooks.com. We will reply within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, but we would appreciate the chance to put things right first.

Children

Our books are written for young readers, but the shop and newsletter are intended for adults. If you are under 13, please ask a parent or guardian to buy or sign up for you.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
